Regional brief · not a ranking of fishing marks
Northern New Zealand: bays and open coastline
When planning in northern New Zealand, distinguish a sheltered bay from open coastline. The Bay of Islands is a marine recreation region, but it is not the same place as an Auckland or Whangārei city reference. Select your departure city, then identify the specific launch or shore access.
If you choose the shore
Do not transfer a bay assessment to ocean-facing rocks. Review your exit route and changing water level before approaching the shore, and confirm the area is open to your activity.
If you choose a boat
Establish whether the trip stays inside the bay or travels outside it. Ask about distance, duration and restricted areas. Fishing rules vary by area and species; consult the authority rather than an old article.
Start with a city reference
Planner times describe the sun and moon in the city’s local time zone. They do not predict fish activity or provide a local wave or tide forecast for this destination. Use them to organise the day, then consult a marine forecast for your specific location.
Before selecting a departure
- Identify the actual location and method: shore or boat.
- Check current access, permissions and restrictions; a directory listing is not permission.
- Review wind and waves for the return, not only departure.
Sources for further checks
Sources describe regions and activities; they do not verify individual fishing marks here or guarantee a season or catch. Recheck changing details when planning.
