Fish seasons: use the chart to choose a target, then check locally

Edited by FishTide · Updated 17 October 2026 · 4 min read

A green season cell narrows the options, but it cannot show whether fish are in front of you today or within reach of your tackle. Location and presentation still matter.

Choose a realistic target and a compatible alternative instead of packing a separate setup for every coloured cell.

Compare two targets beyond their colours

Ask three questions for each species: can I reach its bottom, can my tackle present bait there, and can I identify it and follow applicable restrictions? Exclude an impractical target even if its colour is darker.

When seasonal rankings are close, choose a method you can learn and record consistently. Replacing the entire setup each session makes comparison harder and does not convert the chart into a local abundance measurement.

Separate no bites, bites with bait loss, and catching another species in your record. These are different outcomes, not interchangeable evidence against a season chart.

What do the categories mean?

The site's categories are broad editorial guidance for marine regions. A stronger colour marks a period worth considering, not a recent stock survey or a measured catch probability. Timing may vary between years and between an exposed coast and a nearby creek.

These tables need local review. Where a row lacks a detailed source, do not treat it as a statistical finding. Compare it with local knowledge and your own log, and report corrections with the place, date and scientific name where possible.

Choose the actual coast first

A country can border more than one sea. Select your real location in the tool. Gulf species and seasons cannot automatically be transferred to a Red Sea coast, and similar common names may describe different species.

Scientific names help resolve ambiguity. Site illustrations and photographs are aids, not sufficient identification for a species that may have restrictions.

A season does not choose your method

Ask whether the target can reasonably be reached from shore at your location or whether the relevant method needs a boat. Consider bottom type, presentation and tackle suited to the fish you realistically expect, rather than the species' maximum recorded size.

A chart entry never overrides current closures, protected areas, size limits or permitted gear. Check official local rules independently.

A two-target trip plan

Suppose you have light tackle and are visiting an allowed sandy shore. Choose a main target that fits the location and a fallback using similar equipment, rather than preparing five unrelated rigs because their season colours look strong. Carry bait you can keep in good condition and test it systematically.

If bait returns untouched, reconsider position and presentation before concluding that the season has ended. Repeated small fish may be a reason to move or change target; comply with rules for fish you must release.

Build a more useful local record

Record a specific but appropriate location, sea, confirmed species, local time, bait, method and actual result. Include unsuccessful trips. Avoid publishing sensitive or prohibited spots, and distinguish a known depth from a guess.

Questions

Does peak season guarantee a catch?

No. It helps prioritize a trial, then the local conditions and method still matter.

Do I need different equipment every month?

Change it for a real target or condition, not simply a calendar page. Learning a suitable setup is often more useful than carrying many.

Can one photograph prove a season?

A dated, correctly identified photograph adds an observation. It does not establish the peak of a whole season.

Turn a cell into a workable plan

For a bottom target, establish whether your permitted access allows an appropriate bottom presentation. Presence in the region does not establish presence within casting range. When comparing months, consider effort, weather and method rather than treating the number of published catches as abundance data.

Sources and limitations

Season categories are editorial guidance; each cell has not been validated against a published local catch record. Read the methodology and send documented corrections.
