FISHTIDE FIELD GUIDE

From coastal city to fishing spot: five checks

A near-coast city is only a starting point. Turn it into a practical plan without treating every map result as fishable water.

Understand the directory

FishTide uses GeoNames city reference points filtered against a Natural Earth coastline. The approximate ten-kilometre limit applies to the reference point, not every part of a city. Small islands may be missing, and reaching water can require a longer journey than the straight-line distance. A result identifies a city to explore; it does not verify a public pier or permitted beach.

First: actual access

Use a map to identify a clear public entrance. A short line to water is not necessarily a walking route. Check gates, private land, barriers and navigation channels. Plan your exit, parking and lighting for an evening visit. An old map image cannot confirm that access remains open or a rock edge remains stable.

Second: local rules

Check the official fisheries, protected-area and coastal authorities for the destination. Licences, sizes, seasons and equipment rules vary with area, species and method. Do not transfer Kuwait rules to another country, or assume a past closure date still applies. If a fish name is ambiguous, seek a reliable identification before retaining the catch.

Third and fourth: bottom and exposure

Sand differs from rock, vegetation and reef. Choose tackle for the bottom instead of automatically casting farther. Observe waves from safe ground; their pattern does not reveal every underwater depression. Coastline direction helps interpret wind, but barriers, buildings and channels can alter conditions. Do not enter water to investigate a gutter or current channel.

Fifth: forecast point and time

Ask whether the forecast point is actually offshore, near the fishing area, and expressed in local time or UTC. Check the issue time. An empty value does not mean calm weather. Separate known information from questions to resolve. Finding legal, accessible and understood water matters more than picking the highest score across cities with unequal data coverage.
